10 Days in Kauai: How Three Couples Ate, Adventured, and Unwound
There’s something magical about escaping to an island with people you love. This June, my husband and I packed our bags for 10 days in Kauai, joined by two other couples who are dear friends. We planted ourselves in Princeville on the lush North Shore and made memories across beaches, food spots, and scenic drives that we’re still talking about.
If you’ve ever considered a group trip to Hawaii—or wondered if traveling with friends can enhance your vacation—this one’s for you.
3 Couples, 1 Island, 10 Days in Paradise
We chose Princeville as our home base for its stunning ocean views, proximity to Hanalei and Hideaway Beach, and the relaxed residential feel. Our rental gave us space to cook, gather, and relax together—key for a long trip with friends. We had an amazing balcony overlooking the condo’s pool where we gathered every morning for coffee and evening for dinner and drinks!
Traveling as a group meant shared responsibilities and shared costs, which made it possible to enjoy both splurges and savings. It also meant built-in fun, conversation, and new memories every single day.
Days 1–3: Settling In, Falling for Hanalei & A Cruise Life Detour
Our 10-day Kauai adventure began in Lihue, where we picked up our rental car, an essential for anyone planning to explore the island’s North Shore. Before heading up to Princeville, we made our first official island stop at Duke’s in Lihue, a classic Hawaiian restaurant known for its ocean views and signature Mai Tais. It was the perfect way to kick off our trip.
Knowing we’d be cooking many of our meals, we stocked up at Costco in Lihue for bulk essentials and made a second stop at Foodland to grab fresh produce, local snacks, and, of course, poke bowls—a Kauai must.
Once we arrived at our vacation rental in Princeville, Hawaii, we unpacked and took in the sweeping ocean views. Over the next few days, we settled into the rhythm of island life. My girlfriends and I treated ourselves to a massage from Aloha Massage Kauai, and our husbands decided to go on a guided spearfishing adventure.
A unique twist in our trip? We got the chance to tour Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America while it was docked in Lihue. It was fascinating to see how cruise travelers experience the islands—especially compared to our slow-paced, land-based stay.
While the ship was beautiful and the idea of waking up in a new port each day was tempting, I was pretty grateful for our roomy condo and the freedom of exploring on our own schedule.
Days 4–6: Snorkeling, Spearfishing, and Sunset Grilling
The middle stretch of our trip was pure island magic. We spent our days in the water and our evenings around the grill, living that sweet spot between adventure and relaxation.
We snorkeled and spearfished at Hideaway Beach, one of the most secluded and rewarding spots on Kauai’s North Shore. Its crystal-clear waters and vibrant reef life made it feel like our own private aquarium. We also spent time at Anini Beach, known for its calm waters and excellent snorkeling, a perfect spot for beginners and anyone who wants to float for hours.
One highlight was visiting the luxurious 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay. We snorkeled just offshore and then rewarded ourselves with tropical drinks from their poolside bar. I highly recommend their frosé. It’s icy, refreshing, and completely perfect after a salty swim. Whether you’re staying there or just stopping by, it’s a great way to experience a touch of luxury on your Kauai trip. I am definitely going to consider staying there on my next visit!
Evenings were some of our favorite moments: grilling our freshly caught fish back at the condo while the sun set over Princeville. There’s something special about cooking what you caught, surrounded by good friends and a soft island breeze.
Travel Tip: If you’re planning to spearfish in Hawaii as a visitor, you’ll need a Hawaii fishing license for non-residents. It’s easy to obtain online and ensures you’re following local regulations.
Days 7–10: Rum Tours, Fresh Catches & Slow Evenings
As our trip wound down, we made the most of every moment—soaking up sun, ocean, and laughter before heading home. One of the standout experiences in our final days was the Koloa Rum Safari Tour, a fun and flavorful ride through the Koloa Rum Company’s estate on Kauai’s south shore.
Set on a lush, working farm, the tour was equal parts educational and hilarious (shoutout to our amazing guides, who had us laughing from start to finish). We learned about the estate’s commitment to sustainable farming practices—like their use of banana trees to keep the soil healthy (#bananaslap)—and got a behind-the-scenes look at how local ingredients shape the rum-making process.
The highlight for me? Tasting a perfectly balanced Koloa Rum Mai Tai while riding through paradise—and discovering that the original Mai Tai was actually created by Trader Vic’s in Oakland, California, later made famous by Elvis in Blue Hawaii. A fun dose of cocktail history to go with the buzz.
Back in Princeville, we continued our evening tradition of grilling our freshly caught fish, sipping wine on the lanai, and savoring those last golden hours with our friends. With no rush, no distractions, and no parenting duties in sight, we fully leaned into the joy of just being together.
No Kids, No Stress, All Connection
Traveling with other couples turned a beautiful trip into something unforgettable. Yes, it required flexibility and communication, but it also brought shared laughter, new traditions, and moments of joy we wouldn’t have experienced alone.
A few quick tips if you’re planning a group trip to Kauai:
- If you can, start planning early. You will get better flight and car rental rates if you can plan your trip 6+ months in advance.
- Choose a rental with shared space and room to retreat.
- Mix planned days with unscheduled time.
- Talk openly about money and meals up front.
- Lean into the rhythm of the island—it’s okay to slow down.
Kauai gave us sunsets and sea turtles, roadside smoothies and barefoot mornings. But more than anything, it gave us the rare gift of uninterrupted time with our partners and with each other. Without the usual responsibilities of parenting or the noise of daily life, we were able to reconnect, laugh deeply, and be fully present. Sharing those slow, joyful days with good friends and the people we love most!
