Planning a Girl’s Trip in Napa Valley: Tips from a California Wine Lover

IMG_7810

Hi, I’m Sheba, and I love wine. I love everything about it—how it tastes, how it’s made, the business of viticulture, its rich history, and most of all, California’s vibrant wine culture. Our state boasts the world’s fourth largest economy, thanks in part to thriving industries like wine and agriculture. While you can find remarkable wines throughout California from Redding to Paso Robles, the wines from Napa Valley remain the most celebrated and revered.

Napa Valley is the perfect destination for a girl’s weekend because it offers something special for every age group and interest. Over the past decade, I’ve been fortunate to visit Napa and surrounding regions like St. Helena, Saratoga, Sonoma, and Calistoga for both romantic getaways and all-girl weekend trips with my closest friends. Through these experiences, I’ve discovered a collection of special places that I return to again and again. I’m not being compensated for any of these recommendations, I genuinely want to share my favorite Napa Valley spots with you!

Where to Stay

The Archer Hotel Napa

I’ve stayed at The Archer multiple times and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. This boutique hotel beautifully blends luxury with downtown Napa’s accessibility. There’s something magical about waking up and strolling through downtown with my morning coffee or doing a bit of shopping after an afternoon of wine tasting. Depending on your group size, I recommend booking one of the Archer Den guest suites with a balcony—bonus points if you snag one with a fireplace! These suites sleep four comfortably and offer all the luxury amenities you need for an ideal wine country retreat.

While you’re there, check out Sky & Vine, their rooftop bar offering elevated American grill fare (perfect after a day of tasting), or enjoy a sophisticated dinner at Charlie Palmer restaurant on the main floor.

The Meritage Resort and Spa

The Meritage Resort and Spa is another excellent choice for a luxurious girl’s weekend. Nestled among the vineyards, the Meritage offers a more secluded and tranquil experience than downtown options. The rooms and suites often feature vineyard views, and their spa is fantastic for some well-deserved pampering (a great alternative to wine-tasting). The resort boasts several dining options, including a tasting room and fine-dining restaurant, plus a popular grotto with fire pits, ideal for unwinding in the cooler evenings. If you’re seeking a full resort experience with more space and on-site amenities, this is your spot.

Wines to Taste

Napa Valley vineyards produce many exceptional wines, but Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme. I adore a big, bold Napa Cabernet, and after tasting countless bottles over the years, I’ve developed strong preferences for my favorites.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

In full transparency, I’m a devoted wine club member at Heitz Cellar, and I believe their single-vineyard wines rival some of the Grand Cru vintages of Bordeaux. I highly recommend experiencing this for yourself with a tasting at The Salon. As a member, I receive complimentary tastings throughout the year, which I love sharing with friends during our girl’s weekend getaways.

I’ve brought friends to wine tastings and their annual Quartz Creek brunch on numerous occasions, and each time we’re greeted with unparalleled professionalism and luxury. One of my most memorable visits was a few years ago in July, when I hosted a group of my cousin Dee’s friends—women I’d met during Dee’s 40th Birthday trip to Puerto Vallarta. It was wonderful to reunite with them all.

When our party of eight arrived by limousine, the estate’s staff immediately welcomed us with a tasting of crisp Chardonnay from their Quartz Creek vineyard, accompanied by gougères, caviar, and blinis. We then tasted three vineyard-specific Cabernets, each paired with an exquisite charcuterie selection. Sitting outside among the vines, we unwound, caught up, and savored both the incredible service and beautifully crafted wines.

Pro tip: You can also visit the Heitz Cellar estate for wine tastings. If you want to learn more about Joseph Heitz and the estate’s legacy, I highly recommend the Estate experience. While the vibes lean more luxury-rustic, you’ll receive the same outstanding professionalism and bespoke service.

Brown Estate Napa Valley

This family-owned and operated estate specializes in producing well-balanced Zinfandels, but they also have a “Brown Recluse” Cabernet that I purchase every time I visit. The Brown Downtown tasting room is conveniently located just around the corner from The Archer Hotel, making it an ideal first stop on our tasting rounds. The staff is incredibly warm and friendly, and the space perfectly balances modern-meets-rustic charm.

The tasting typically begins with a crisp rosé followed by several of their signature Zinfandels and a taste of the “Brown Recluse” Cabernet. They also offer a small selection of gourmet cheeses and crackers to accompany your tasting. The relaxed, inviting atmosphere makes it perfect for easing into your wine-tasting day.

Important: Book your tasting at Brown Downtown ahead of time. They’re frequently fully booked with limited seating.

Chandon

A girl’s trip wouldn’t be complete without some bubbly! Chandon is a California classic, and their Yountville property provides a breathtaking backdrop for sparkling wine flight tastings. I recommend booking one of their garden cabanas for a lunch or brunch tasting (they seat up to 12). You’ll enjoy a private experience while sampling some of their more exclusive releases.

Covert Estate

I’m unabashedly recommending another estate where I’m a member because it’s truly exceptional. Wine tastings at Covert are by appointment only, so plan accordingly. If you include this estate on your tasting journey, you won’t regret exploring their portfolio of Coombsville Cabernets.

I first visited Covert during a bachelorette weekend and fell head over heels for a Cabernet Franc they produced. To me, it tasted almost… spicy. I thought about that wine for years but couldn’t remember where I’d tried it (it was a bachelorette weekend, after all!). Years later, I rediscovered Covert and immediately became a member. I also closely follow the work of their winemaker, Julien Fayard.

During my most recent tasting, my friend and I enjoyed three Covert Cabernets and one Nicholson Cabernet (a sister brand). Our host expertly guided us through each wine, giving us ample time to savor and consider each offering. After the tasting, she took us on a tour through the cave where much of the wine ages in barrels. If you’re seeking a unique experience at a boutique Napa winery, look no further than Covert Estate.

Bricoleur Vineyards

I recently enjoyed a mom’s getaway weekend in Sonoma and had the pleasure of tasting lovely wines and delicious bites at Bricoleur Vineyards. This estate is truly stunning, with beautiful gardens and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. We opted for their “Gathering” experience, which included a guided tasting of award-winning wines paired with small, farm-to-table bites. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their wines and the estate’s history. It’s a fantastic spot for a more casual yet luxurious wine-tasting experience, especially if you want to enjoy beautiful scenery and delicious food alongside your wine. Check their calendar when planning your trip as they host a variety of events and activities throughout the year.

Where to Eat

Press Restaurant

Have foodies in your girl squad? Impress them with a dinner reservation at Michelin-starred Press Restaurant. Press is renowned for its exceptional focus on Napa Valley cuisine, offering a sophisticated dining experience with a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. The menu often features prime steaks and seasonal dishes, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. Their wine list is exclusively dedicated to Napa Valley wines, boasting an impressive collection that perfectly complements the food. The atmosphere is elegant yet welcoming, making it ideal for a special occasion or memorable dinner during your girl’s trip.

Mustard’s Grill

Everyone will tell you to visit Mustard’s Grill, and there’s a good reason why. This Napa Valley institution is beloved for its vibrant atmosphere and consistently delicious American comfort food with a gourmet twist. It’s an excellent lunch choice because it offers a more casual and lively dining experience compared to formal dinner spots. Their menu features everything from the famous Mongolian Pork Chop to fresh salads and sandwiches, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The portions are generous, and the quality of ingredients is always top-notch. It’s also conveniently located, making it an easy stop between wine tastings. After a morning of exploring vineyards, Mustard’s provides the perfect relaxed setting to refuel before continuing your Napa Valley adventure.

Scala Osteria

Scala Osteria offers an authentic Italian dining experience in downtown Napa, known for handmade pasta, fresh seafood, and classic Italian dishes. The ambiance is elegant yet lively, with a sophisticated interior that still feels welcoming. It’s a fantastic option for a girl’s weekend dinner because it provides a chic setting for a celebratory meal. The menu offers wide variety, ensuring everyone will find something to love, and their extensive wine list (including many Italian selections) complements the food perfectly. It’s also ideal for sharing plates and enjoying a relaxed, conversation-filled evening.

Getting Around

For a girl’s trip to Napa, I highly recommend hiring a private car or car service. If your goal is to reconnect and relax with friends, this investment is well worth it. Over the years in Napa, I’ve used various transportation options—from limousines and luxury SUVs to Uber. However, when wine tasting with friends, I prefer a private car service that stays with us for the entire day. This is invaluable because when I purchase a case of wine I particularly love, I can store it in the car while we continue our day’s adventures. It eliminates logistics stress and lets you focus on what matters: quality time with your favorite people!
