Aalborg – A week in Northern Denmark

Denmark

October 1, 2025|Denmark, Europe, Logistics, Travel

Last December, when my dad and step-mom invited us to Denmark to celebrate a close family friend’s 90th birthday, we did not hesitate. Traveling with grandparents is our love language, and this time my sister and brother joined too, turning it into a full family affair.

Why Aalborg?

We were headed to Aalborg, in North Jutland, to honor a beloved scholar and family friend who had recently become a Danish citizen. Aalborg sits along the Limfjord and blends Viking-age history with modern, design-forward energy. It is colorful, creative, and surprisingly easy with kids.

Getting There: SFO → AMS → AAL

We booked our flights through Delta Airlines from San Francisco Airport (SFO) to Aalborg (AAL) with a brief layover in Amsterdam (AMS). On our outbound flight, Delta flew us on a partner flight with KLM on a newer Boeing 787-10. The plane and crew were fantastic and it was one of the more enjoyable long-haul flights I have had recently. We booked the Premium Comfort cabin seats for us and it was the best choice for a 9.5 hour flight. We had an abundance of legroom and were able to sleep on the way over. The KLM Premium Comfort cabin also has some lovely perks like blankets (although I packed my favorite Sand Cloud blanket), printed menus, complimentary drinks, activity kits for the kids, and warm towels before take off and landing.

Once we arrived in Amsterdam we went through passport control and waited in the Schiphol for Grandma, Grandpa and my sister to arrive. My brother would be flying to Denmark a few days after us. The Amsterdam airport has some of the best shopping I have seen in an international airport that I have seen so far! I couldn’t help but go on a side quest to grab some Augustus Bader eye patches and L’occitane hand lotion. Travel is dehydrating! After meeting up, we boarded our German Airways flight to Aalborg, a journey of about an hour and fifteen minutes. Jet lag was starting to set in, bringing back memories of our struggle with it during the first few days of our 2022 trip to France. Upon arrival in Aalborg and collecting our luggage, we quickly took an Uber to our hotels.

Where We Stayed: Pier 5 on the Limfjord

Pier 5 hotel sits right on the water and nails a cozy, chic Danish vibe. We booked the Family Room, which has a queen bed and bunk beds. That layout is an instant win with kids. A heads-up for American travelers: many hotels in Northern Denmark do not offer traditional air conditioning. We were comfortable with the windows open and cool fjord breezes. The blackout curtains saved our mornings, and the breakfast spread was generous and fresh.

Tip: If air conditioning is essential for you, check the larger chains and confirm room specs before booking.

Kid-Approved Aalborg: Zoo Day

We always add something magical for the kids, and The Aalborg Zoo delivered. The zoo offers a delightful escape into the animal kingdom, and it quickly became a highlight for our kids. This beautifully maintained zoo is home to over 100 different species from around the world, providing an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

One of the absolute must-sees is the interactive lemur exhibit. Here, you can walk directly through their habitat, getting incredibly close to these playful primates as they swing through the trees and often come right up to the visitors. The kids were enthralled by their antics, and it was a truly memorable, hands-on experience that made them feel like they were part of the lemurs’ world.

Another impressive feature is the polar bear exhibit. Designed to mimic their Arctic environment, it’s a spacious and well-thought-out habitat that allows these magnificent creatures plenty of room to roam and swim. We spent a good amount of time watching them, mesmerized by their powerful presence and graceful movements in the water. The zoo does an excellent job of educating visitors about the challenges facing polar bears in the wild, emphasizing the importance of conservation.

Throughout the Aalborg Zoo, the thoughtful design aspects are evident. The enclosures are designed to feel natural and spacious for the animals, often using natural barriers rather than obtrusive cages. The pathways are well-maintained, and there are numerous shaded areas and picnic spots. Beyond the animal exhibits, the zoo also demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability. From waste management initiatives to promoting biodiversity within its own grounds, it’s clear that the Aalborg Zoo is not just about entertainment but also about education and environmental responsibility. It’s a wonderful place where families can connect with nature and learn about global wildlife in an ethical and engaging setting.

Getting Around: Put the Keys Away

We skipped the rental car. Central Aalborg is walkable, safe, and scenic. We wandered Vesterbro and Karolinelund, stopped for street art, and made time for playground breaks. The feeling of safety and ease was exactly what we wanted with little ones.

Let’s Talk Food: Elevated Without the Attitude

I cook a lot at home, so travel meals need to be worth it. In Aalborg, they were. On the second night of our stay, our family friends arranged a phenomenal five-course, four-hour, private dinner at Mortens Kro restaurant (also a boutique hotel).  I can’t think of a better way of spending time in a foreign land than to eat local food and be merry with local friends. Each dish, from the amuse bouche to the two desserts were thoughtful and highlighted local and seasonal ingredients (think fresh fish, asparagus, fresh red strawberries, and intense herbs). The kitchen even made elevated nuggets and fries for the kids.

Over the next few days we enjoyed eating smørrebrød at Penny Lane Café, more Danish breakfast buffets at our hotel, a couple of Happy Meals from McDonalds, and a lovely Indian dinner at Naan Stop Kebab. On Friday, we celebrated our friend’s 90th birthday party with a beautifully paced, four-course private dinner at Buhlmann Restaurant in Scheelsminde Hotel. It was nice to see all of his closest family and friends travel from all corners of the world to celebrate his life and achievements, and to surround him with love! It was quite the dinner party! While the occasion and company were the main course, I was blown away by the food. Everything was well prepared and visually stunning. From the Cava and Caviar on the outside patio overlooking the property’s large garden, to the post dinner coffee and cookie service was detailed and service driven.

Shopping and Culture: Department Stores to Rooftops

Grandma and I settled in at Salling and Magasin du Nord. Salling’s rooftop café has postcard views over the Limfjord and is perfect for a coffee pause. Downstairs, the Aalborg Museum offers a rich timeline from Vikings to industry. In Old Town’s pedestrian streets, you will find well-made clothing and shoes at many price points. The Danish love of quality and design is not just an aesthetic. It is practical.

A Northern Detour: Skagen (Day Trip)

We carved out a day trip to Skagen, Denmark’s northernmost tip, where the Baltic and North Seas meet. It is a beautiful, windswept moment of pure nature that deserves its own guide. Consider this your teaser. I will share the details in a separate post.

What’s Next: Copenhagen and Sibling Side-Quests

After our Aalborg chapter, we boarded a flight to Copenhagen for five days of museums, canals, and city adventures — read all about it in 5 Days in Denmark’s Capital. My brother set off for his own European loop through Amsterdam and France, while we dove into Denmark’s capital. I will share more soon.

Quick Notes and Takeaways on Aalborg

  •  Best for: Families who enjoy walkable cities, design-forward stays, and food that overdelivers without pretense.
  •  Do not skip: Aalborg Zoo for the kids, Salling Rooftop for the views, and a long dinner at Mortens Kro or Bühlmann.
  •  Good to know: Many hotels in Northern Jutland do not have traditional air conditioning. Fjord breezes and blackout curtains help a lot during the Summer months.
  •  Extend your trip: Pair Aalborg with a coastal visit to Skagen as a day trip and a metropolitan visit to Copenhagen for five days. That timeline felt perfect.

If Aalborg is Denmark’s warm handshake, Copenhagen is the big city hug. Together, they are a sweet spot for family travel.
