Why Oakland, California Should be Your Next Family Vacation
You may be scratching your head—and I get it. Oakland isn’t exactly the first destination that comes to mind when planning a family getaway. But hear me out. Nestled beside its world-renowned sister city, San Francisco, and just North of Silicon Valley, Oakland offers the perks of a major cultural hub without the overwhelming crowds.
As someone who grew up in the Bay Area, I’ve watched Oakland evolve dramatically over the years. While the city still has challenges and areas for growth, there’s no denying that the influx of energy, diversity, and prosperity has transformed Oakland into a vibrant place worth exploring.
Because our family has ties to the Bay Area, we love taking spontaneous trips there. Oakland is packed with dining, culture, and family-friendly entertainment. We’ve had incredible meals ranging from fine dining to no-frills diners. And our kids can’t get enough of places like Children’s Fairyland and the Oakland Zoo. The city has an easygoing vibe: welcoming, inclusive, and open. You can strike up a conversation with almost anyone. And did I mention the food scene? Let me share some highlights of why Oakland should be your next family vacation.
Oakland Zoo
Nestled in the hills of Oakland, the Oakland Zoo is more than just a place to see animals; it’s an immersive and educational experience for families. Home to over 850 native and exotic animals, the zoo offers various exhibits designed to educate and entertain. One of the highlight features is the California Trail, which showcases the state’s diverse wildlife and natural habitats through expansive enclosures and stunning views of the Bay Area. Kids, okay adults too, will love the gondola ride up to the California Trail, providing a bird’s-eye view of the zoo and beyond.
Beyond the animal exhibits, the Oakland Zoo is committed to conservation and offers numerous educational programs and interactive experiences for all ages. It’s a place where learning about wildlife and having fun are intertwined.

Children’s Fairyland
Children’s Fairyland is an Oakland icon. Since 1950, this whimsical storybook theme park has been delighting generations of Bay Area families. Perched on the shores of Lake Merritt, Fairyland brings nursery rhymes and fairy tales to life through colorful sets, gentle rides, and live shows.
Recent renovations have made the park even better, with a new storyland area, train ride, food court, and—thankfully for parents—plenty of benches. Designed for children under 8, Fairyland is a safe, magical place where little ones can meet Humpty Dumpty, climb through Alice’s rabbit hole, or enjoy a puppet show in one of the oldest continuously operating puppet theaters in the country.

Chabot Space and Science Center
If your kids are budding astronauts or you simply love stargazing, don’t miss the Chabot Space and Science Center, located in Redwood Regional Park. The center offers hands-on exhibits, a planetarium, and access to three historic telescopes. Families can enjoy daytime solar viewings, evening telescope viewing parties, and immersive planetarium shows that make science fun and accessible for all ages. It’s a great way to mix education with wonder.
Located at the historic North Field of Oakland International Airport, this museum has over 30 vintage aircraft and plenty of interactive exhibits. Kids love the open-cockpit days where they can climb inside a real plane.
Jack London Square
A bustling waterfront district with restaurants, shops, and frequent family-friendly events like outdoor movies and farmers markets. There’s also a kayak rental for families who want to paddle along the Oakland Estuary.
Redwood Regional Park
Just minutes from downtown Oakland, this park feels like another world. Towering redwoods shade the trails, and families can hike, picnic, or enjoy wildlife spotting. There are stroller-friendly trails, too, if you’re traveling with littles. I grew up visiting this park and I love bringing my children there now for picnics and hikes.
Piedmont Avenue & Temescal Alley
For families with older kids or teens, wandering these charming neighborhoods is a treat. Temescal Alley especially has quirky shops, ice cream, and fun local boutiques to explore.
Cultural Opportunities
The Oakland Museum of California is one of my personal favorites. Its galleries weave together California’s art, history, and natural sciences into exhibits that are both thought-provoking and interactive. As lifelong Californians, my family and I felt a deep connection learning about the state’s rich cultural heritage, from Native American history to the Gold Rush, the rise of Silicon Valley, and the Black Power movement.
Families with young children will love the Nature Playspace, a hands-on outdoor area designed for exploration and play.
If your trip coincides with the first Friday of the month, don’t miss Oakland First Fridays. This lively street festival transforms Telegraph Avenue into a vibrant hub of music, food trucks, art, and community. It’s a one-of-a-kind way to experience the creativity and diversity that define Oakland.
Dining
Oakland’s food scene is legendary, and it reflects the city’s incredible cultural diversity. Here are a few of our family-tested favorites:
-  East African: Café Colucci (5849 San Pablo Ave) serves authentic Ethiopian dishes bursting with flavor. The spice level is bold, so if you’re dining with kids, you may want to order mild dishes or sides to balance it out.

-  East Asian: Shan Dong Restaurant in Chinatown is famous for its hand-pulled noodles. Kids love watching the chefs stretch the dough in real time, and the family-style portions make it easy to share. Get there early—it fills up fast.
-  California Cuisine: Chez Panisse Café in Berkeley offers a more relaxed take on the iconic Alice Waters restaurant. Perfect for a lunch or early dinner with kids, reservations are required. The café menu is seasonal and absolutely delicious.

-  Waterfront Dining: For meals with a view, head to the Berkeley Marina. The Berkeley Boathouse (inside the DoubleTree Hilton) offers fresh, approachable dishes and a kid-friendly setting. Another option is Skates on the Bay (100 Seawall Dr.), where floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco skyline.
-  Family-Friendly Pizza: Arizmendi Bakery & Pizzeria (3265 Lakeshore Ave) is a local cooperative bakery that serves up some of the best vegetarian pizza in Oakland. The menu changes daily, with unique flavor combinations like roasted potato and rosemary or corn and poblano peppers. It’s casual, affordable, and perfect for families. You can grab a slice or a whole pie, plus fresh baked goods to take back to your hotel or vacation rental. The location near Lake Merritt makes it an easy stop after a stroll or paddle.
Where to Stay
If you’re planning an overnight, the Hilton DoubleTree at the Berkeley Marina is a great choice for families. We stayed there when my son was just a few months old, and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. The marina views are beautiful, and the easy access to Oakland and Berkeley attractions makes it a convenient base.

The Sonesta Hotel in Emeryville is also an excellent choice. They have plenty of suites on the 11th floor with sweeping views of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge or the Oakland hills. Families appreciate the indoor pool (great for kids to burn off energy), fitness center, and onsite restaurant with a kid-friendly menu. The hotel is also within walking distance of the Bay Street shopping district, which has dining, shops, and a movie theater—perfect for an easy evening out without having to drive. Parking is available, and it’s just a short hop onto the freeway for day trips into San Francisco or around the East Bay.
Lastly, if you want to book a short-term home rental, Airbnb or VRBO, check for homes to rent on the hillside that offer a view of the San Francisco skyline. The sunsets from the Piedmont/ Montclair area are spectacular on a clear evening.
Oakland may not be the first city you think of when planning a family trip, but that’s exactly why it works. It’s a hidden gem because it’s vibrant, diverse, and full of unique experiences that kids and adults can enjoy together. From storybook adventures at Fairyland to sweeping views from the zoo’s gondola ride, Oakland offers family memories waiting to be made.
So, the next time you’re looking for a family vacation spot, skip the obvious and head to The Town.
